Previously Certified Teachers

If you previously held a BC teaching certificate, this section describes your options.

Is your certificate expired, relinquished or cancelled?

You will need to apply for a new certificate. Please review the information under the Becoming a Teacher tab and then submit your application online through the Applicants Area.

You will not need to re-submit the following documents that we already have on file:

  • identification documents that are legible and notarized
  • transcripts, unless you have completed additional coursework since you last held BC teacher certification.

To qualify for a new certificate, you must meet our current certification requirements. You will not qualify for a new certificate if you have not completed coursework requirements from your previous evaluation that are still required under current regulations. If this is the case, we will send you a letter explaining what you need to do to qualify once we have completed the evaluation.

Do you hold a Ministry of Education certificate issued before January 1, 1988?

Certificates issued by the Ministry of Education before January 1, 1988 are no longer valid. If you wish to teach in BC, you will need to apply for a new certificate. Please review the information under the Becoming a Teacher tab and then submit your application online through the Applicants Area.

It is possible that you may not qualify for certification as you will need to meet the current certification requirements. If this is the case, we will send you a letter explaining what you need to do to qualify once we have completed the evaluation.
